Wellington “Giro di Tongariro”

April 25 - April 27

Alfisti from anywhere are warmly invited to join in this spectacular weekend of driving on Alfa-friendly roads around the Tongariro area. The total distance (based on Kapiti start/finish) is around 1,000km so it’s something like our very own Mille Miglia! The roads are largely sealed although there may be a few short gravel sections. The following brief preview is for Wellington folk, but people from other regions should be able to work out where best to join in during ANZAC weekend.

Day 1: Saturday 25 April

We will meet up with Alfisti from other regions for coffee at Ashhurst and then travel spectacular Rangitikei roads towards Mangaweka to visit Carteroni, manufacturers of Lancia 037 rally replicas. The afternoon will take us to Turangi on SH1 leaving time for a dip in the Tokaanu Hot Pools before dinner.

Day 2: Sunday 26 April

This promises to be epic! We will retrace some of the 2023 route with some fabulous roads around Taumarunui, but with an added special stage (oops, I mean nice road) on the way to Waimarino. A highlight will be a run to Iwikau Village at the Top o’ the Bruce before heading back to Turangi for the night.

Day 3: Monday 27 April

All too soon it’ll be time to head home but we’ll do it the fun way! That means taking the mighty Parapara Rd from Raetihi towards Wanganui and then heading east via Fordell to Hunterville, before you point your car homewards.

Here’s what you need to do at this stage.

  1. Book accommodation in Turangi for Sat 25 and Sun 26 April. There are many affordable options on the usual websites including Riverstone Lodge 027 229 8572 and Tongariro River Retreat 07 386 8949.
  2. Please let us know by email (or phone) if you are coming so that we can provide restaurants with accurate numbers.

More information will be emailed to registered participants in April showing the intended routes and providing details on visits that we’ll be making.

There is no registration cost for this event.

We know that some of our members have ANZAC Day commitments, so the option exists of joining the Giro later on the 25th or even early on the 26th. We’d love to have you participate.
